We think that Dorothy hit the nail on the head: there’s just no place like home. The place where you sleep, hang your hat and relax is inherently special — it is where all your favorite things are; it’s the place where memories are made; it’s filled with your own special comforts. Your home should make you happy. You also should feel good in your space and surround yourself with items you love.
As we’re heading full steam into the chilly fall and winter seasons, you may be looking for home décor pieces and ideas to make your home cozier — you know, achieving special feeling you get when you’re “hunkering down,” listening to the wind, weather and chaos outside and feeling cozy, comforted and calm. Creating a cozy home is easier than you may think and can be achieved with just a few items. Also, creating a cozy home also doesn’t have to cost a lot. Here we’ve provided five tips for creating a cozy home that we think are quick, easy and inexpensive.
Tip #1: Add Some Warm Lighting
Creating a cozy atmosphere can be as simple as turning of those overhead lights (they’re often harsh, unflattering and too bright) and adding several table lamps. There’s nothing cozier on a dreary day than turning on a warm lamp and watching the rain or snow from the comfort of your home. Don’t miss Miles Kimball Lighting and Lighting Accessories department on our website for some home lighting ideas. Add light to a dark corner with a decorative nightlight, add a Himalayan Salt Light to a shelf or add a good set of LED candles to a coffee table. If you need great lamps but are on a very tight budget, second-hand stores are often fantastic places to pick up table lamps. We love the look and the ease of string lights — they can be added above paintings, in plants and on console tables for instant brightness. Purchase string lights you can plug in or opt for battery-operated fairy lights for a magical and cozy effect in your home. Remember, if you’re looking to make your home cozier, opt for “warm” white lights. Cool lights or “outdoor” lighting are great for tasks like reading, crocheting or other crafts. If you’re wanting to achieve a cozy vibe, however, look for “warm” white lights.
Tip # 2: Green it Up
Adding some organic green home décor item can make your home seem instantly cozy. Plants are also beneficial to air quality: through photosynthesis, they use carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Don’t have a green thumb? No worries. There are several plant options available that are easier to tend to than you may think.
Plant beginners (or those who are especially plant challenged) can start with plants that are notoriously hard to kill, such as aloe vera, jade plants and other plants from the succulent family. These plants are much, much easier to overwater and require a hands-off approach to care. (They only really need a good soaking about once a month—or less.) Pothos (pictured above) and spider plants are also easy to care for. They are also easy to propagate (make baby plants with) and don’t need much light. Pothos can be purchased as a hanging plant, too, which adds instant coziness to a corner. Add an inexpensive bracket to a wall (or over a window) and add a hanging pothos plant. Pothos stems can be cut and added to wine bottles, vases or mason jars full of water and scattered throughout your home for extra coziness. Just empty and replace that water twice a month to make sure it doesn’t get dank — these easy plants will thrive in even the darkest rooms and provide a cozy vibe to your home.
For those who REALLY can’t keep plants alive, artificial flowers are often a great option. Today’s artificial flowers and faux plants are unbelievably lifelike and require zero care. Consider artificial hanging stems placed on high shelves, on top of cupboards or on the top of curio cabinets.
Tip # 3: Textiles, Rugs, Throws, Blankets
Nothing says cozy like a soft, cuddly blanket that you can wrap around your shoulders or throw across your lap on a cold night. With today’s options of affordable textiles, rugs and blankets, you can swap out these items seasonally with every season, too. Add several throw blankets across chairs, couches and sectionals for easy comfort and color and to coordinate them with your existing décor. Check out Miles Kimball’s selection of blankets, throws and plush blankets for instant softness. Add a good scattering of throw pillows so everyone has a comfortable place to sit. Add some ottomans and welcoming benches throughout your home where you can add pillows. For those who don’t have carpeted floors, you can create a cozy ambiance with decorative rugs, doormats and rug sets.
Tip # 4: Curtains
There’s just something about shutting the world away, closing curtains and turning on the warm light of lamps in the home. Adding inexpensive curtains to your home can not only keep away chilly drafts, it can soften the look of your home, creating a cozy effect. New room darkening curtains can also control the outside lighting, which is beneficial in spaces like bedrooms. Curtains are also a great seasonal way to swap out your décor. Miles Kimball has a fantastic selection of curtains, room darkening curtains, valances and more that will add some warmth and coziness to every room of your home.
Tip #5: Make it Welcome
Today’s home décor is really focused on being welcoming, grateful and positive. With inspirational sayings, Bible verses and uplifting sentiments, you can add these pieces for a modern cozy feeling. These easy additions to your home can really make guests feel welcome, at home and cozy in your space as well. Large “welcome” signs outside your door and a well-decorated porch can give guests, friends and family members a positive, welcoming vibe before they ever step foot in your door. Adding a large, leafy plant just inside the front door (if space is available) is also a way to cozy up your entryway. Add a console table to your foyer and add a plant, a candle, a lamp and a welcoming, eye-catching home décor item.
