Adding Color to Your Outdoor Garden Spaces

Spending time outdoors is essential for your health and happiness. With a vibrant landscape, you’ll look forward to getting outside. A colorful garden is a great way to impress guests and wow neighbors, making your home the place to be when the weather warms up.

If you want to see more than greenery when you step outside, Miles Kimball can help. We’ve come up with the five best ways to add color to outdoor spaces and we also offer lots of affordable outdoor décor items so you can bring your vision to life. You’ll be able to infuse your landscape with every color of the rainbow, while remaining on a budget, with our unique finds.

1) Flowering Plants and Colorful Pots

Begin your journey to a colorful landscape by keeping things natural. Beautiful flowers and plants come in every imaginable color. With the right seeds, roll-out flower mats or bare-root plants, you can cultivate small pops of color or a sweeping outdoor art scene. Planting your flowers in brightly colored pots is another way to create a dynamic outdoor space. If you don’t have the gardening skills to tend to real flowers or if you want year-round blooms, artificial planters and hanging baskets will also enliven your yard.

2) Colorful Garden Outdoor Furniture

You’ll need a place to sit if you want to relax outside, so you might as well make your seating area a focal point of the outdoor space. Instead of another bland, tan armchair or white lounger, get furniture that’s blue, yellow or orange. Adding simple cushions to your current outdoor chairs or setting the patio table with a printed vinyl outdoor tablecloth can make a big difference visually. When the weather gets cold or rainy, some striped outdoor furniture covers will continue to distinguish your tables and chairs.

3) Colorful Garden Wind Spinners and Yard Décor

Metal wind spinners are an underrated way to make landscapes livelier. Their colorful designs are even more vibrant when the wind blows and their blades rotate and gleam under the sun. In addition to traditional outdoor decorations, like sunflower wind spinners and spiral wind spinners, we offer creative décor to brighten your yard. Just watch the Giant Flower Wind Spinner or Biking Kitten Spinner Stake in action to see how delightful they can be on a blustery day. Yard flags, decorative garden stakes, figurines and bird feeders are other unique ways to make your landscape more colorful.

4) Outdoor Lighting

You can entertain long after the sun goes down with weatherproof outdoor lights. Some of them look so good you’ll want to keep them hanging during the day, too. You can keep it simple with traditional hanging lights and candle lamps or be bold by installing LED flower stakes, butterfly clip lights, spiral string lights and multicolored lanterns. By getting solar-powered lights that store energy from the sun, you won’t need to spend a cent on electricity.

5) Walls and Entryways

Adding color to garden walls, front yard fences or patio entryways will set the tone for the rest of your landscape. Paint these areas with a solid, eye-catching color to serve as a backdrop for plants and dining areas or create a mural for a fun and whimsical setting. Outdoor wall hangers and fence sitters are a fun, temporary alternative to paint. Use floral, bird-themed, patriotic and holiday welcome signs as year-round or seasonal outdoor décor.

Summer Outdoor Home Maintenance Tips

It’s summer! Now is the time to gather your to-do list for your home’s summer maintenance plans to make sure your ducks are in a row for the upcoming fall, winter and spring. The summer months are the time of year when you need to be especially cognizant of home maintenance, taking care of your home’s exterior (and interior) areas to ensure they’re in good shape. With the pleasant, longer days, you’re able to do so much more outdoors! Miles Kimball has a great selection of outdoor home tips, as well as products, that make spring and summer cleaning fast and easy. We’ve put together four important summer outdoor home maintenance tips to ensure that all those essential tasks are checked off your list.

Clean Windows

When the sun is shining during the summer months, it’s easier than ever to spot those dirty windows. Springtime’s pollen and rains may have left your windows looking cloudy and streaked. Clean windows let more of that sweet sunshine in and provide a brighter, clearer view of all your summertime flowers and beautiful plants. Now is the time to clean them well, both inside and out. Although it’s quite easy to use your favorite traditional window washing method for ground-level windows, high and second story windows and windows can cause a little bit of a problem. A telescopic window washer, like our Long Handle Window Cleaner, is a great tool to have on hand. Thanks to its six-sectioned handle, it can be easily modified to take on those hard-to-reach windows. This must-have tool reaches up to 10 feet and has a two-sided cleaning head that features a foam scrubber on one side and a rubber squeegee on the other. It also includes a hook-and-loop microfiber sleeve that works great for ceiling fans and other light fixtures.

Empty Gutters

Debris, such as leaves, twigs and pine needles, has a way of clogging up gutters throughout the year. Dirty, debris-packed gutters, if they are left unattended and are not properly cleaned, can lead to roof and foundation issues. Keeping your gutters well cleaned is much easier (and less expensive) than paying for repairs down the road. To keep your gutters performing well, it’s important to clean them well at least once a year, depending on how many trees you have surrounding your home. The perfect time to do so is when the temperatures are nice. Experts suggest that the latest that gutter cleaning be performed is in the fall to prevent issues like ice dams over the winter. Miles Kimball has a great selection of home maintenance and gutter cleaning options, such as our handy Telescopic Gutter Brush. This aluminum brush extends up to 6 feet so you can easily clean the leaves, twigs and other debris from your gutters. Our Home & Gutter Flusher is also a great choice. This tool attaches to a standard garden hose and adds pressure to the water flow, quickly and easily blasting debris from your gutters and downspouts.

Trim Shrubs

Overgrown shrubs not only look messy and unkempt, they can be damaging to your siding and your home’s exterior. When greenery is allowed to grow too close to your home’s exterior, it can affect moisture evaporation and air circulation. This can ultimately cause mold, rot and other issues. During the summer, it’s easy to trim these shrubs to keep them away from your home’s siding, brick or stucco. It’s particularly easy if you have a sharp, easy-to-use tool that makes trimming and pruning quick and easy. Our Lightweight Garden Sheers provide a strong, yet easy to manage, way to trim small to medium-sized branches. From rose bushes to landscape shrubbery, our hedge shears are a must-have in your garden tool lineup.

Storage

Summer is a great time to clean out your sheds, tidy your outdoor storage areas and reassess your needs. Keeping all your spring, summer and fall gardening items in good condition and on-hand when they’re needed is important. Luckily, Miles Kimball is the place to go for your garden and garage storage and organization needs. Hoses can be a particular issue during summertime; a hose without convenient storage and organization can become quite tangled and can ultimately break and crack. Our Hose Holder is an affordable way to keep your hose neatly nestled next to your home, so it is ready for use whenever it is needed. For garages and sheds, keep your gardening tools and other items organized with our Corner Garden Tool Rack or our Garden Tool Organizer. Having a designated place to keep your shears, shovels, rakes and hoes makes it much easier to find them. Otherwise, these items have a way of taking over your garage.

Trick or Treat: Outdoor Halloween Decoration Ideas

Happy Howl-O-Ween!

From its candy and its food to its outdoor decorations, costumes and décor, it’s no secret that Halloween continues to rise in popularity. Billions of dollars are spent on Halloween goodies every year. Americans clearly know how to eat, drink and be scary!

Creep it Real

Halloween’s popularity shows no sign in slowing down, and why should it? October 31 is the time of the year to express yourself, to come as you aren’t, to have some fun and to apply your creepy creativity to some outdoor spaces. Outdoor Halloween décor is easy with today’s pre-lit, whimsical and super-fun outdoor décor. Both kids and adults can get into the spook-tastic fun: Halloween is created for both the young — and the young at heart. Whether you’re bone to be wild and love your outdoor skeletons or you’re the ghostest with the mostest and love to shake your boo-ty, you’ll find some something totally awesome at Miles Kimball’s Halloween store. Below, we’ve featured some of our favorite Halloween décor and outdoor décor items that will turn the heads of neighbors and make you the talk of your town.

Light-Up Halloween Flair

When it comes to outdoor Halloween items, nothing is easier than pre-lit Halloween décor items that are just your (blood) type. If you like the look of whimsical, pre-lit holiday décor, you love the glow that these charming designs with mini lights will provide when placed in a window. All that is needed is a nearby electrical outlet and/or an extension cord for instant Halloween décor. Choose between our Black Cat and Moon Light, our charming Jack-O-Lantern Pumpkin Light or our batty “Happy Halloween” Shimmer Light.

DIY Halloween Lighting: Pumpkin Carving

Prefer DIY Outdoor Halloween lighting? You can’t get much easier (or classic) than pumpkin carving — which is the quintessential outdoor Halloween décor. Pumpkin carving has been the go-to family friendly activity for decades and allows you to be as traditional — or as unique — as you want. Whether you opt for a simple, smiling jack-o’-lantern or you spend hours creating an intricate, funny or scary scene, this staple outdoor Halloween decoration offers you hours of fun — not to mention tasty pumpkin seeds to be shared with the family.

Consider a scarecrow-themed lighted jack-o’-lantern: “sew” your pumpkin’s mouth up with twine. Turn the traditional pumpkin-carving on its head and use the “stem” of your pumpkin as your jack-o’-lantern’s nose, cutting a silly or a traditional smiling mouth below and triangle eyes above the stem. Pay homage to your four-legged furry friends by carving cat or dog paw silhouettes into your pumpkin. Want a super-easy outdoor pumpkin decoration that takes mere minutes to create? Consider spray painting multiple sizes of pumpkins and gourds gold metallic, black, silver or white and arranging them on your porch steps, patio or landscaping areas. When it comes to outdoor décor, it’s best to go big or gourd home!

Take a Gander at Outdoor Halloween Goose Decor

Everyone is talking about our Outdoor Goose and his wacky wardrobe that includes outfits for every season, including Halloween. Just in time for Halloween, our friendly neighborhood decorative goose has decided to don his Pumpkin Goose Outfit, his Witch Goose Outfit and/or his Frankenstein Goose Outfit. Pair one or more of our outdoor geese for a fantastical, fun and fa-BOO-lous outdoor garden décor looks that will add conversation starters and whimsical interest to your front yard.

Decorative Yard Stakes, Garden Flags and Halloween Garden Décor

Looking for some fun, quirky and adorable looks for your Halloween-inspired garden décor? Consider decorative garden stakes and Halloween-themed garden flags. These are almost-instant outdoor Halloween décor choices that add color, fun and whimsy to your spaces. Metal garden stakes, plant stakes and garden flags are a quick and easy way to brighten up potted plants, hanging baskets and more. Choose from several charming garden stake styles by Fox River Creations™, including Jack-O’-Lantern plant metal stake sets (which will give ‘em pumpkin to talk about), Halloween Planter Stakes Set or Metal Black Cat Stake sets. What about eye-catching Metal Witch Leg garden stakes? These’ll turn any yard, planter or landscaping island into a fun-loving “crime” scene that may require further scrutiny.

Fall Cleanup Tools and Tips

With fall on your mind, you may be looking forward to preparing your gardens, lawns and outdoor areas for winter. Fall cleanup is not only a good idea because it helps tidy your spaces and get them ready for the cold-weather season, it also can help prepare your outdoor areas for spring, giving them a jumpstart and preparing them for success next summer.

Fall Gardening Care Made Easy

Gardening experts agree that now is the time to care for both your flower beds and your yard. Raking and collecting those leftover leaves, aerating your lawn and overseeding is part of this process. Until that first frost, you’ll still likely be caring for your lawn, too. At Miles Kimball, we’re always on the lookout for innovative lawn and gardening tools that will help making these sometimes-tedious chores more efficient. From leaf-gathering and composting to aerating, storage and choosing the right product to overseed, we’re highlighting some of our handy tools and products. We’ll also discuss some tips that will help your lawn, garden and outdoor spaces thrive by using some of these products, many of which are exclusive to the Miles Kimball brand!

Leaf-Gathering and Composting

Your outdoor lawn care arsenal probably contains some of the tried-and-true go-tos, such as rakes, shovels, hedge trimmers and other tools that are created to help you maintain and gather yard refuse, waste and fallen leaves. Although these tools work great, there are often alternative, must-have tools that will make yard work easier, such as our garden hands.

Our set of two Garden Hands™ and Gorilla Garden Hands are fantastic at those awkward tasks, such as gathering leaf piles and putting them in compost bags. They’re also great at gathering those fallen leaves, grass clippings and other organic matter to help create environmentally friendly composting areas in your yard. Another way to make those leaf-gathering chores easier is to find a handy product that will help you gather yard refuse in one spot, making cleanup a breeze. A durable leaf collecting bag with handles makes collecting and discarding leaves and other materials quick and easy.

Tool Organization and Outdoor Cleanup

If you’re looking to add tool organization and garage and outdoor structures tidying to your to-do list, we have a great selection of organizational products in our outdoor Storage and Maintenance category for your home, garage and shed. Don’t miss our corner garden tool organizer, which wisely utilizes those overlooked corners in your garage or shed and keeps all of your shovels, tools and rakes in one spot. Fall is also the time to keep your outdoor furniture protected from the elements. Not everyone has a covered structure in which to store their outdoor furniture and essentials like grills, lawn chairs, outdoor sofas and tractors. Be sure to check out our outdoor furniture covers for high-quality protective products that will protect your investments from rain, snow, UV rays and other inclement conditions.

The Easy Way to Aerate Your Lawn

Throughout the summer, grass clippings and other organic matter may create “thatch,” which is a layer of dead grass that can prevent moisture from reaching the roots of your lawn. A layer of thatch also can prevent nutrients from reaching the roots of the grass. Thinning grass and weeds also can cause soil compaction, which is another way that your lawn may not be getting the nutrients it needs to stay healthy. In the long run, both thatch and soil compaction can be detrimental to your yard’s health. The remedy to both of these issues is called “aeration.” This involves essentially poking holes in the thatch and the compacted soil, allowing the roots to gain access to nutrients, rain and oxygen. Aeration also reduces water runoff, improves air exchange and strengthens turfgrass roots.

Professionally aerating your yard can cost hundreds of dollars. However, clever lawn and gardening tools are available that allow you similar the benefits for a fraction of the price. Lawn aerator sandals are a fantastic way for you to strap on some special shoes and get that aerating done in your yard. Better yet, buy a couple of these clever lawn aerator sandals and have your kids, grandkids, nieces or nephews get some exercise and play (carefully, of course!) while they aerate your lawn for you.

Overseeding

Along with aeration, overseeding is one of those tasks that will help keep your lawn in top shape, getting it ready for winter and ultimately giving it a kickstart in the spring. Along with aeration, this is one fall task that can be pricey. A great option is to use a proven grass seed option yourself, again at a fraction of the price of a professional lawn care service.

Check out our Quicklawn® Grass Seed, available at Miles Kimball. This evergreen “Wonder Seed” can be spread quickly and easily over your yard with an inexpensive seed spreader (available at any hardware or retail store) and sprouts in as little as five days. This shade tolerant, insect-resistant and easy-grow grass seed is just what you need for those thinning areas to give them the boost they need. This product works in all kinds of soil — from clay to sandy.

Get Your Outdoor Furniture Ready for Fall

There’s a scent of smoke in the air from a nearby fireplace, there’s a slight snap in the evening breeze and pumpkin spice is on the menu at your favorite coffee shop. These events can only mean one thing: autumn is getting closer. September 22 will be here before you know it; although 2020 has been a strange year, time continues to march ahead!

Regardless of whether or not you’re happy to bring out the sweaters and think about those winter clothing essentials, fall is the time to do a bit of cleanup in your outdoor spaces. In fact, fall and winter preparation chores may have already been added to your to-do list to complete before that first frost. Luckily, Miles Kimball and Kimball Corner have compiled some must-do chores to get your home ready for the fall and winter season, including chores that include your outdoor furniture.

Clean and Cover Your Outdoor Furniture

The wildly fluctuating temperatures can be tough on your outdoor furniture, grills and outdoor structures. When these items (which are sometimes a big investment) aren’t properly cared for and protected during the winter season, their lifespans are reduced considerably. If you’re like most Americans and can’t afford to replace your outdoor furniture on a yearly basis, fall is the time to winterize outdoor furniture in order to extend its life.

After a full summer, your outdoor furniture and your outdoor rocking chairs may be ready to take a break. Clean these items thoroughly with a pressure washer or a garden hose before saying goodbye to them for the winter. Sweep off debris, add some gentle detergent to a bucket, scrub with a good water broom and then rinse well with water. Clean the cushions and wash the covers, if possible. If you’re lucky enough to have a designated space in a shed or a garage where they’re covered, this is ideal. However, patio furniture covers are also a great option if a covered space is not available.

Patio furniture covers are also great to use even if you have a covered space. They add a bit more protection to your patio furniture during storage. Miles Kimball has many different styles of furniture and equipment covers in high-quality vinyl and in a variety of styles, colors and shapes that will protect your outdoor patio furniture and other investments. Shop Miles Kimball for chair covers, grill covers, table covers, HVAC covers and lawn mower covers that will fit your spaces perfectly.

Clean Gutters

Leftover debris, leaves and nests displaced from summer storms can also be left over in your gutters and downspouts and can clog your gutters. Ideally, gutters should be cleaned twice a year — in fall and in spring. Clogged gutters can lead to wet basements, interior and exterior damage, mold growth and other undesirable consequences.

Whether you hire a service to clean your gutters or you choose to do it yourself, Miles Kimball makes cleaning your gutters an easier task. It’s important to have a sturdy ladder that can be placed on a solid surface (not on landscaping rocks, woodpiles or other moveable objects). Also, wear a long-sleeved shirt, work pants and high-quality garden gloves. Miles Kimball has some great options available in our gardening tools, such as our NFL Sport Utility Gloves, our Gorilla Garden Hands and our set of two Garden Hands™.

While you’re getting up close and personal with your gutters, it’s also great to inspect the fascia boards, your shingles and the condition of the gutters you’re emptying. Note any cracks, splits or damage. Gather your tools (gutter scoops, trowels, buckets, garden hoses, fire nose nozzles, spray nozzles). Pressure washers are ideal for this chore. Even better? Look for special garden hose attachments that are designed specifically for cleaning gutters. Miles Kimball has a convenient home and gutter flusher tool and a telescopic gutter brush that will help make this job more convenient.

Caring for Hoses and Outdoor Spigots

Cold climates can also mean winterizing your outdoor water sources and spigots. Disconnect your hoses and other fittings that are attached to your outdoor spigots. Now is the time to inspect these spigots and other fixtures for leaks or drips and to completely drain them. To do this, shut off the water line to that space and then let the spigot open until all of the water drains out. It is important to remember to close the spigot after this step. Cover your outdoor spigots with tight-fitting, outdoor faucet socks/covers, such as our outdoor faucet covers and faucet sock sets. These insulated covers contain Thinsulate® insulation that help save and protect your outdoor faucets from damage that can occur in cold weather.

Organize and Tidy Outdoor Spaces

Grandma once said that “everything should have a place.” When it comes to getting your outdoor areas ready for fall and winter, this saying has never been truer. Tidy your outdoor lawn equipment: bring these tools inside, organize them with our garden tool organizer or corner garden tool rack and keep them secure throughout the winter to extend their lives. Miles Kimball has a great selection of outdoor storage and organization items to help get your outdoor spaces in top shape. Protect your wood piles with tarps and our set of four tarp clamps to keep your wood free from moisture and bad weather. Shop bungee cords and bungee cord sets at Miles Kimball that are great for multiple uses.
